HEAT RETENTION

If there’s one fundamental decision you need to get right, it’s the fabric of your house.

Formance™ Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) can be used for walls, roofs and floors. The panels come in various standard thicknesses and associated R values.

AIR TIGHTNESS

Air tightness is the key to a durable, warm and healthy home.

Stopping air is the second-most-important job of a building enclosure. Next to rain, air leaks through walls, roofs, and floors can have the most damaging effect on the durability of a house. Uncontrolled airflow through the shell not only carries moisture into framing cavities, causing mold and rot, but it also can account for a huge portion of a home’s energy use and can cause indoor-air-quality problems.

MOISTURE

Moisture is the enemy of durability.

Contrary to traditional wisdom in the New Zealand construction industry today a rigid air barrier on the outside of the external is not a good idea from a moisture control perspective.  In most areas of NZ at most times of year the inside of the home is warmer than the outside; this generates a gentle positive pressure from the inside of the building to the outside. If the inside is not airtight any moisture in the air is carried through the wall assembly towards the outside. When it arrives at the outside of the building and meets the cold surfaces it can condense and cause durability issues.

In a nutshell this is the issue that councils are facing in the colder parts of New Zealand - durability issues from poor control of internal moisture.
